We spend a
lifetime learning how to be a family to one another.
In Taiwan's traditional funeral culture, gold, silver and black
mountains (Filial Piety Mountains) are crafted from paper as expressions of
blessings and remembrance for the departed. While gold and silver symbolise
prosperity, the black mountain carries the love, respect and remembrance of
descendants for their ancestors. These paper-crafted mountains embody the
emotions of those left behind, reflecting the enduring bonds between family
members and generations.
Drawing inspiration from the paper-crafted
Black Mountain found in Taiwanese funeral traditions, “Mine”brings
traditional filial piety and contemporary family relationships into the
language of the body, exploring how familial love takes different forms
throughout the stages of life.
Six performers, bring different generations together
on stage. Through the blending of contrasting Yin and Yang bodily qualities,
the work moves between innocence and maturity, softness and weight, attachment
and separation, revealing the passage of life and the ever-changing
relationships within a family.
As we grow older, our parents gradually age alongside us. Love
left unspoken, feelings of indebtedness that can never be fully repaid, and our
thoughts on companionship and farewell are expressed through physical contact
and movement, becoming a reflection on the bonds of family.
One Black Mountain carries the memories of generations; six bodies
journey through the coming and going of life.
Through the body, “Mine” revisits the
meaning of filial piety, searching for the meaning of love and family where Yin
and Yang meet.
