Holding a broom, a maid casts a spell. Co-created by Filipina artist Eisa Jocson and Sri Lankan artist Venuri Perera, this work premiered in Frankfurt, Germany to great acclaim! Beginning with an exploration of the plight of foreign domestic workers, it proceeds to overturn preconceived notions of maids and witches. While being responsible for the daily affairs of households, they may also be queens who secretly know everything that happens inside the home. As the magic begins, the broom seemingly dances across the stage, becoming a mysterious symbol of a maid's glamorous transformation. They appear to be silently tidying up. But, under the spotlight, power, dependency, and control begin to take shape. Their energetic movements gradually blur the boundaries between maid and witch, such that two worlds, daily life and magic, begin to infiltrate one another. Trained as a visual artist with a background in ballet, she came to contemporary dance through pole dancing. In her works, she explores body politics in the service and entertainment industry as seen through the socioeconomic lens of the Philippines. She studies how the body moves and what conditions make it move – be it social mobility or movement out of the Philippines through migrant work. In her creations, from Death of the Pole Dancer to Macho Dancer to Host to Princess to Superwoman Band and Manila Zoo – capital is the driving force of movement pushing the indentured body into 'developed' geographies. She regularly presents her pieces at renowned theatres and international festivals in Asia and Europe, such as Tanz im August, TPAM Yokohama, Zürcher Theaterspektakel and Frankfurter Positionen. She is a recipient of the 2018 Cultural Centre of the Philippines 13 Artists Award, the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award 2019, the SeMa-HANA Award 2021 and the Tabori Award International 2023. 維努里．佩雷拉 Venuri Perera 維努里．佩雷拉為來自斯里蘭卡可倫坡的獨立藝術家、策展人與教育工作者。她的創作關注可見與不透明之間的權力關係，並試圖擾動既有觀看框架，重新思考我們如何感知、理解與命名他者。她的獨舞與合作創作觸及暴力民族主義、父權體制、移民、殖民遺緒與階級等議題。自 2008 年以來，其作品受邀於歐洲、南亞、東亞、中東與非洲多地藝術節及研討平台發表。她也曾與韓國編舞家 Geumhyung Jeong（Theatre Spektakel、Monsoon Australia）及日本編舞家 Natsuko Tezuka（Kyoto Experiment、SIFA 新加坡國際藝術節）密切合作。 佩雷拉曾構思並策劃可倫坡舞蹈平台（Colombo Dance Platform，Goethe-Institut）相關計畫，亦曾任斯里蘭卡藝術委員會舞蹈小組成員。她畢業於 DAS Theatre，目前往返於阿姆斯特丹與可倫坡兩地。 Venuri Perera is an independent artist, curator and educator from Colombo. Exploring the power dynamics of visibility and opacity, she attempts to destabilise and disorient how we perceive the ‘other.’ Her solo and collaborative works deal with violent nationalism, patriarchy, immigration, colonial heritage, class, and have been invited to festivals/symposia across Europe, South and East Asia, Middle East and Africa since 2008. She has closely collaborated with choreographers Geumhyung Jeong (SK) (Theatre Spektakel / Monsoon Australia), Natsuko Tezuka (JP) (Kyoto Experiment / SIFA Singapore). Perera conceived and curated the projects of the Colombo Dance Platform (Goethe-Institut) and is a member of the Dance Panel of the Arts Council in Sri Lanka.
